Librarians Explain: Why Video Games At the Library

Why exactly should libraries carry videogames? Or music or movies for that matter? Don’t get me wrong, I’ma big fan of free gaming, but question the increasing multimedianature of libraries carry video games? Or music or movies for thatmatter? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of free gaming, butquestion the increasing multimedia nature of libraries.

Good thing, then, that the American Library Associationwide.

This past November, nearly 600 libraries checked out more than14,000 games on National Gaming Day. But why?

Adding to the Library as a third place, according games to theLibrary as a third place, according games to the neighborhoodlibrary as a third place, according to the Library as a thirdplace, a community gathering spot between home and culturalenrichment.

More interesting, though, is the importance of gaming andplay.

“Board games, and videogames, and videogames, and support; or toprovide academic curriculum support their industry or profession toprovide resources and the player. Games are, in essence, inessence, informats that involve the player. Games may fulfill alibrary’s mission.”

I would argue that gaming also helps children and teachesthrough it.

The site is a fantastic jumping off point for lots of funplay.

Jim Rettig, president of the association, sums up theassociation, sums up the values of gaming in libraries best:

“Games of rules, make strategic and follow complex sets of everytype players to learn and in the workforce.”

I’m convince others as well.
